I started teaching a new SAT class the day after Halloween, when all of the students were strung out on sugar (suuure...sugar). All of you will be happy to know that the ever-classy fart joke is still popular in high schools across the country. While I was calling role, one helpful 'lil buddy informed me that Paul (in the restroom) preferred to go by Palali (a lot of kids with non-Hawaiian names choose Hawaiian nicknames). When Paul returned to class and I called him Palali the class broke into hysterical laughter. Yes, it was very very funny that the white lady didn't know that palali means fart in Hawaiian. Oh, fart jokes... so witty and clever in every language! The thing about the definition (as it was explained to me) is that it can also mean to speak imperfectly, like a foreign accent or speech defect. How do you think the second definition was introduced... do you think when Captain Cook first landed on the islands the natives thought, sure, the white guy's nice enough, but what is that sputtering, spattering fart coming from his mouth?
We later encountered a reading passage about Balzac. BAL.ZAC. White people are so funny!

Wow, we thought we were busy! It sounds like life is good in Hawaii. Annika and Justin are wondering what Paddy was for Halloween.
Yay! So glad that you are blogging again. We missed you! Four weeks from today, we will be landing in Hawaii! SOOO excited...
I'm glad those students are keeping you on your toes.
Why ever were you painting yourself blue? Were you going to be Smurfette?
